Monochrome I explores the materiality of Joomchi in black and white. I distress with a rock, mark with a soldering iron, prick with holes, machine sew (without thread) and burn mulberry paper. As I add water, the process creates an unpredictable lacy effect. The spacing between layers creates shadows which vary depending on how it is lit. This monochromatic work—with its changing shadows---invites a contemplation of mystery: what is real and what is illusion?
